A. How to Obtain an Indonesian Import License
If you decide to import a product into Indonesia, you must first establish a company. All importers must have an Indonesian-based company, whether a foreign-owned company (PT PMA) or a local company (local PT).
Following registration, your company must apply for a business identification number (Nomor Iduk Berusaha, or NIB) via the Online Single Submission System (OSS).
The NIB has no expiration date and replaces the Company Registration Certificate, Importer Identification Number, and Customs Registration NIK (Nomor Induk Kepabeanan) that were required before implementing OSS.
B. What else is needed to import a product into Indonesia?
Obtaining an import license is the first step toward distributing your product in Indonesia.
It is critical to check two things before importing goods:
- The imported product should be related to the NIB’s sector business.
- The Indonesian Harmonization System (HS) Code, which is used to categorize all imported products.
- These are significant because Indonesian import licenses are restricted to a specific industry classified in the NIB and do not allow the import of goods unrelated to a business sector.
Additional licenses are required when importing products into Indonesia to ensure that Indonesian product standards are met.
