A. What is a Halal Certificate and Why Do You Need It?

In a nutshell, halal means “permissible.” According to Islamic Sharia law, all products and services that do not contain prohibited materials, ingredients, or methods are considered halal. In Indonesia, Halal certificates declare that the products adhere to Sharia law. It then serves as a justification for Muslims to consume or use certain products or services.

B. Product That Must Be Halal Certified

According to the most recent Halal Product Assurance provision, previously voluntary halal certification for many consumer products has become mandatory. Before October 17, 2024, food and beverage products will be the first to be Halal certified.

According to the law, certain chemicals, biological products, cosmetics, drugs, and used goods containing traces of animal elements must be halal certified. In Indonesia, packaging services, animal slaughterhouses, storage services, and distribution services must all be halal certified.

C. The Halal Certification Process in Indonesia

The National Body of Halal Assurance (BPJPH) oversees the halal certification process in Indonesia, while the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) establishes the halal compliance standard and issues the Halal fatwa. During the certification process, the BPJPH will appoint Halal Inspection Institution (LPH) officials to conduct an audit to determine whether the products are halal.

D. Important Note on Halal Certification in Indonesia

  1. VALIDITY AND RENEWAL
In Indonesia, a halal certificate is valid for four years. As long as the manufacturing process or composition does not change, ensure that it is renewed no later than three months before its expiration date.
